Empowering Women Waste Worker’s for Safer and Dignified Work Environments

The Women Waste Worker Project, implemented by the Institute of Cultural Affairs (ICA) Nepal with support of the Steelworkers Humanity Fund in Canada. The major goal of the program was to enhance the socio-economic rights and occupational health and safety of women waste workers in Kathmandu. Since August 2023, the project empowered 127 women from marginalized communities through comprehensive training on Ocupational Health and Safety (OHS), Social Protection Measures and Leadership Management and Governance. This initiative also established solidarity network of the 200 women waste workers with the aim of strengthening their voices and representation.

The initiative engaged over 500 stakeholders, including local government bodies, NGOs, women waste worker, Waste management companies representatives. Through advocacy efforts, the project promotes safer and more dignified work environments by addressing occupational health concerns and advocating for social protection measures. It strives to create lasting positive changes in the waste management sector, contributing to broader social justice and equity in Kathmandu.
